Jamie Doornbosch - Kitchener Rangers

As promised to one of my readers, here's a piece on Kitchener Rangers defenseman Jamie Doornbosch.

First off, Doornbosch is not eligible for the 2011 NHL entry draft. As an early 1990 DOB, Doornbosch was eligible for 2008, 2009 and 2010 draft and passed up in each.

He was invited to the Nashville Predators training camp in September on a try out with the team that is loaded in young talented defensemen.

Originally drafted by the Peterborough Petes, he played in only 4 games in 2006/07 going pointless. He played his first full season in 2007/08 registering 2 goals and 10 assists. He followed that up the following season, getting more ice time and in 64 games tallied 8 goals and 29 assists. In his final season in Peterborough he broke out offensively netting 12 goals and 38 assists for 50 points in 68 games.

In September 2010, GM Dave Reid traded Doornbosch to the Kitchener Rangers and so far Doornbosch is on pace to set career highs in goals and assists. He has 4-10-14 totals to date.

Doornbosch is a smooth skating, puck moving defenseman who makes a very good first pass. He has a very good shot, both slap shot and wrist shot. He gets quality power play time playing along side Ryan Murphy.

If there is a knock on Doornbosch, its his defensive game, which he has worked on and improved. I'm a firm believer that you can't teach offense, but you can certainly teach defense. With the right coaching, Doornbosch should improve on his defensive game at the next level.

It's my opinion that someone will sign him to an NHL contract next summer as a free agent and prepare him for the defensive game in the AHL.

Landeskog for Captain?

The Chicago Blackhawks made it official today: Jeremy Morin will not be returning to the Kitchener Rangers. Instead, the Hawks have sent him to Rockford of the AHL.

So, with the Rangers still not having named a captain for this season, does this open the door for Gabriel Landeskog? There is still the possibility that Jeff Skinner gets returned to junior by the Carolina Hurricanes, but at this point it looks like he will get at least the 9 games allowed in the NHL. Are the Rangers waiting to see if Skinner is returned?

Landeskog has shown to be a leader. He is an alternate captain now. He is usually the first to come to the aide of a team mate. He is always giving players pats on the bench, talking it up etc. And i can't say i have ever there seen a player that wants to learn as much as Landeskog.

He  would be my choice as captain. No second thoughts about it.

My conversation with Ian Pulver re Ryan Murphy

I recently had a conversation with agent Ian Pulver regarding his client and Super d-man Ryan Murphy.

On Murphy being left off of Team Canada: I was there for the final day of camp and Ryan was not only the best defenseman on the ice, but the best player.

On rumors Team Canada coach has personal issues with Ryan: He's a good kid. He's quiet and goes about his business. I haven't heard the rumors but i find it hard to believe.

On Ryan's training this summer: Ryan has stayed in Kitchener all summer to train with Paul Fixter.

On whether Ryan has added any size or bulk over the summer: Ryan has been working hard over the summer. He's over 5'11" now and will play at over 170 pounds this season. (he played last season at 5'11" 160 pounds).

On where he see's Ryan going in the 2011 Draft: No predictions. Ryan is by far the best offensive defenseman in the draft class. He's working hard at the things he needs to improve.

Tobias Rieder

Kitchener Rangers
5'10" 165 lbs

German hockey guru Nils Kloppmann calls Reider "maybe the most skilled German player ever".

The 5th overall pick in the CHL import draft made a call to fellow German and Boston Bruin Marco Sturm before making his decission to leave his German team where he had 3 years remaining on his contract, to come play in North America.

“I want to play the best hockey I can play with the guys in my age group,” said Rieder in an interview with the K-W Record,  “That’s the main reason, I think.”

Greatest Hockey Quote Ever

The greatest hockey quote ever has to come from  Germany's Tobias Rieder when he said :
I was an atheist, then I saw Bobby Orr play and then I knew there was at least a hockey god!
Rieder was the 5th overall selection in the 2010 CHL import draft by the Kitchener Rangers. I'll have something up on him soon.
