Otters’ Greg McKegg Named OHL Player of the Week

Also considered for the award this week was Nashville Predators prospect Ryan Ellis of the Windsor Spitfires, and 2011 NHL Entry Draft prospect Vladislav Namestnikov of the London Knights.  Ellis led the OHL with nine points in three games scoring once and adding eight assists, while Namestnikov scored his first career hat-trick as part of a seven-point week with five goals and two assists.

67’s’ Lindsay Named OHL Player of the Week

Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that forward Cody Lindsay of the Ottawa 67’s is the OHL Player of the Week for the week ending January 30.  Lindsay scored six goals including two hat-trick performances in two games while posting a plus-minus rating of plus-6.

Lindsay’s three goals on Friday night against the Barrie Colts earned him his first hat-trick of the season as second star of the 7-4 win.  One night later he scored the first three goals of the game for a natural hat-trick including the second period game-winner as first star of a 3-2 win over East Division rivals the Kingston Frontenacs.

Lindsay, a 20-year-old from London, ON, is competing in his fifth OHL season and has played 314 career games with the 67’s.  So far this season the overage forward has produced 46 points in 48 games.

A pair of Niagara IceDogs were also considered for the award this week including 2011 NHL Entry Draft prospect Ryan Strome and San Jose Sharks prospect Freddie Hamilton.  Strome led the league with nine points in three games scoring once and adding eight assists, while Hamilton found the net three times and added four assists for seven points in three games.  In goal, JP Anderson of the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors won three games posting a goals-against-average of 0.80 and save percentage of .966.

Seth Griffith Named OHL Player of the Week

The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Seth Griffith of the London Knights is the OHL Player of the Week for the week ending January 23.  He led the Knights to three wins this week recording eight points including two goals and six assists with a plus-minus rating of plus-3.

Griffith’s week was highlighted by a career-high five-point game on Sunday in Oshawa as part of a 6-5 overtime win over the Generals.  He scored one goal and added four assists which included setting up Jared Knight for the game-tying and game-winning goals to receive second star honours.  Griffith also scored the game-winner on Friday night in a 4-2 win over the Peterborough Petes, and recorded two assists on Thursday as the Knights defeated the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds 4-3 in a shootout.

Griffith, who turned 18 on January 4, is from Wallaceburg, ON.  Eligible for the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, he has 41 points in 44 games playing in his first full OHL season with the Knights after playing in just 17 games last season.

A pair of Kingston Frontenacs were also considered for the award this week including forward Ryan Spooner and defenceman Taylor Doherty.  Spooner produced nine points in three games scoring five goals and four assists, while Doherty scored twice and added four assists.  In goal, Alain Valiquette of the Sudbury Wolves led the league with 106 saves in three games posting a 2-0-0-1 record with a goals-against-average of 2.27 and save percentage of .938.

Generals’ Jensen Named OHL Player of the Week

The Ontario Hockey League today announced that 2011 NHL Entry Draft prospect Nicklas Jensen of the Oshawa Generals is the OHL Player of the Week for the week ending January 16.  Jensen scored three goals and four assists for seven points in three games with a plus-minus rating of plus-1.

Jensen’s week was highlighted by his first career five-point game Saturday in a big 6-5 comeback win against the Ottawa 67’s.  He scored the game-tying goal and added four assists as first star of the game as the Generals scored four unanswered goals in the third period to earn the win.  On Sunday he scored two goals as the game’s second star despite a 5-3 loss to the Sudbury Wolves.  He was held without a point on Friday in a 5-3 loss to the Kingston Frontenacs.

Jensen, a 17-year-old from Herning, Denmark, is playing in his first OHL season and is currently fifth in rookie scoring with 42 points in 35 games.  Jensen is ranked 20th by NHL Central Scouting and will compete with Team Cherry at the 2011 Home Hardware CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game January 18-19 at Air Canada Centre.

The newest Windsor Spitfire Jake Carrick was also considered for the award after scoring three goals and five assists for eight points in three games.  Rookie forward Lino Martschini receives honourable mention after tallying seven points in three games with five goals and two assists.  In goal, Mark Visentin of the Niagara IceDogs went 1-0-0-1 with a shutout victory posting a goals-against-average of 0.48 and save percentage of .986.

Ryan Strome names OHL Player of the week

The Ontario Hockey League today announced that forward Ryan Strome of the Niagara IceDogs is the OHL Player of the Week for the week ending December 5.  Strome scored five goals and picked up three assists for eight points in three games with a plus-minus rating of plus-3.

Tyler Toffoli Named OHL Player of the Week

The Ontario Hockey League today announced that forward Tyler Toffoli of the Ottawa 67’s is the OHL Player of the Week for the week ending November 14.  Toffoli led the OHL with nine points in three games scoring six goals and three assists with a plus-minus rating of plus-7

Honorable mention was my OHL Draft Eligible Player of the week Shane Prince.

Jason Akeson Named OHL Player of the Week

Fellow Rangers Gabriel Landeskog and Ryan Murphy receive honourable mention for the award this week after each recording nine points in three games.  Landeskog scored five goals and four assists also matching Akeson’s plus-minus rating of plus-7, while Murphy led all defencemen with a goal and eight assists.  In goal, JP Anderson of the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors won three games including a shutout victory posting a goals-against-average of 0.67 and save percentage of .973.

Justin Shugg Named Player of the Week

The Ontario Hockey League today announced that forward Justin Shugg of the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors is the OHL Player of the Week for the week ending October 31.  In three games Shugg scored five goals and three assists for eight points with a plus-minus rating of plus-4.

Shugg’s week was highlighted by a four-point game on Sunday scoring a hat-trick and adding an assist as first star of a 7-5 victory over the Sudbury Wolves.  His first goal of the game was a shorthanded marker that put the Majors on the board in the first period before adding two goals in the second period including one on the power play.  His assist set-up Chris Doyle’s game-winner late in the third period.  Shugg also earned first star honours on Saturday night in Barrie scoring two goals including the game-winner on the power play plus a shorthanded goal as part of a three-point game to lead the Majors to a 5-2 win over the Colts.  He also recorded an assist on Friday night as part of a 5-1 win over the Kingston Frontenacs.

Shugg, an 18-year-old from Niagara Falls, ON, is playing in his fourth OHL season and first with the Majors.  Selected in the fourth round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft by the Carolina Hurricanes, Shugg will represent Team OHL at the 2010 SUBWAY Super Series Monday November 15 in Sudbury, ON.

Daniel Erlich of the London Knights and Kale Kerbashian of the Sarnia Sting were each considered for the award this week.  Both players had eight points in three games with Erlich scoring three goals and five assists, and Kerbashian scoring four goals and four assists.  In goal, Jack Campbell of the Windsor Spitfires won three games while posting a goals-against-average of 2.27 and save percentage of .925.

Joey Hishon Named OHL Player of the Week

The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Joey Hishon of the Owen Sound Attack is the OHL Player of the Week for the week ending October 24.

In two games Hishon scored four goals and four assists for eight points with a plus-minus rating of plus-4 and becomes the second straight member of the Attack to win this award following teammate Garrett Wilson.  Hishon returned to the Attack lineup on Friday night and scored two goals while adding an assist despite a 7-5 loss to the Sarnia Sting. On Saturday night, Hishon led the Attack offense with a five-point game in a rematch with the Sting scoring two goals and three assists as first star of the 9-4 win.

Garrett Wilson named OHL Player of the Week

The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Owen Sound Attack captain Garrett Wilson is the OHL Player of the Week for the week ending October 17.  The forward scored a league-high seven goals and added an assist for eight points in three games with a plus-minus rating of plus-7.

Moon Named OHL Player of the Week

 The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Kingston Frontenacs’ forward Nathan Moon is the OHL Player of the Week for the week ending October 10.  Moon led the league with nine points in three games scoring three goals with six assists and a plus-minus rating of plus-1.

Alex Aleardi Named OHL Player of the Week

The Ontario Hockey League today announced that forward Alex Aleardi of the Plymouth Whalers is the OHL Player of the Week following the first week of regular season action ending September 26.  Aleardi led the league in scoring with eight points including seven goals and one assist with a plus-minus rating of plus-4 in three games.

Aleardi had two hat-trick performances and was twice named first star of the game including opening night against the Windsor Spitfires, and Saturday night against the Barrie Colts.  He added an assist on Thursday to factor in on all four Whalers’ goals despite a 5-4 shootout loss to the Spitfires to open the regular season, however his three goals on Saturday helped the Whalers earn their first win of the season by a 6-2 score over the Colts.  He also recorded a goal Friday night despite a 3-2 loss to the London Knights.

Aleardi, an 18-year-old from Farmington Hills, Michigan, is playing in his third OHL season and first with the Whalers after being acquired from the Belleville Bulls just prior to the start of the season.  Last season he recorded 41 points in 64 games scoring 16 goals and 25 assists splitting time with the Bulls and Kitchener Rangers.

Windsor Spitfires’ forwards Zack MacQueen and Alexander Khokhlachev were also considered for the award after each recorded six points in three games.  MacQueen’s two goals and four assists and Khokhlachev’s three goals and three assists led the defending champs to a pair of victories on the OHL’s opening weekend.  In goal, Philipp Grubauer of the Kingston Frontenacs finished the week with a goals-against-average of 2.00 and save percentage of .954 highlighted by a shutout victory with 44 saves Saturday as first star in a 3-0 win over the Belleville Bulls.
