Mississauga Majors take 1-0 Series Lead

The Mississauga St Mikes Majors to a 1-0 Championship Series lead with a 5-2 victory on home ice over the Owen Sound Attack on Tuesday evening.

As almost everyone knows by now, both teams will be heading to the Memorial Cup Championships no matter the outcome of this series. But players from both sides made it clear that winning the League Championship would mean more to them than the Memorial Cup. Or so they say.

The first period got off slow as it was a feeling out process for both sides as the two teams are meeting for the fist time in almost five months when they played their only two meetings of the season 8 days apart.

Devante Smith-Pelley got Mississauga on the board just 3:54 into the contest on the power play when he scored his eighth of the post season from Casey Cizikas and Stuart Percy. Robby Mignardi would then even things up for the Attack with a power play goal of his own at 6:11 from Mike Halmo and Andrew Shaw. It was Mignardi's tenth of the playoffs.

Owen Sound would put ten shots on JP Anderson while Mississauga had only five on Scott Stajcer. Jordan Binnington, who hasn't played since the opening round against the London Knights, dressed as backup to Stajcer. Mississauga was 1 for 1 on the power play while Owen Sound was 1 for 2.

Smith-Pelley regained the lead for the Majors with his second of the game from Cizikas at the 4:27 mark of the second. At the 14:00 point the Majors would take a two goal lead when Percy and Justin Shugg set up Cizikas for his fourth of the playoffs. Just 43 seconds later, they would make it a three goal lead on a goal by hometown boy Chris DeSousa, his third, from Rob Flick.

The second would come to a close with the Majors up 4-1. Both teams would be unable to convert on the power play: Both were 0/2. The Majors would out shoot the Attack 21-7 in the second period.

The Attack would start the third on the power play when Jamie Wise was called for charging at the 20:00 minute mark of the second. They would pull themselves back into the game when Mignardi scored his second of the game on that power play from Shaw and Matt Petgrave.

That's the only one of 12 shots the attack would get passed Anderson in the third. Mississauga would manage just two shots in the third but made one count when Jordan Mayer scored on the empty net at 19:47 to seal the victory.

Owen Sound was 1/4 on the power play in the period while the Majors were 0/2.

Game two goes in Owen Sound on Thursday at 7:00 pm.
