Mississauga Defeats Kootenay 3-1 to Advance To Cup Final

On a night the Boston Bruins eliminated the Tampa Bay Lightning in the NHL to move on to the Cup Finals, the Mississauga St Mikes Majors did the same to the Kootenay Ice in the CHL to move onto the Memorial Cup Finals. (Sunday 7:00 pm on Rogers Sportsnet and NHL Network USA)

Just 34 seconds in, Cody Eakin took a boarding penalty to put Mississauga on the powerplay and the Majors made the Ice pay. Marc Cantin made a beauty blind pass behind the back to Stuart Percy along the boards who found Devante Smith-Pelly in the slot to one time a shot passed Nathan Lieuwen to put the Majors up 1-0 at the 1:03 mark.

The game would turn physical and continue through into the second period where the game went back and forth with Lieuwen and JP Anderson making key saves. It took until 17:40 of the second for the games next goal when Smith-Pelly grabbed a loose puck in the corner and circled into the slot and fired a shot to beat Lieuwen for his second of the game and put the Majors up 2-0.

Kootenay would score a powerplay goal with .08 seconds remaining to pull the Ice within 1. Cody Eakin tried a wrap around the was stopped by Anderson and the rebound went right to Joe Antilla who made no mistake and fired it home.

Late in the third, with Lieuwen on the bench for an extra attacker, a lazy play by the Ice in their own zone allowed Chris DeSoussa to steal the puck and take it to the front and fire the puck into the empty net to seal the victory.
